What to Wear: Casual Events

What to Wear: Casual Events
Hi everyone! It's Audrey (@welcometoplanetearth) here with (drumroll, please)................. our first tip! We were originally tip-gypsies but the account got shut down :(

If you're like me, then you absolutely panic when you see the words "dress is casual" on an event invitation. Suddenly, your closet is boundless. Dresses or shorts? Purple or pink? Are jeans casual (we wish!)? Choosing your outfit may become an affair that could last up to ten minutes before the event starts, and you still don't have your makeup and hair done!
Here I've classified the clothes by common "casual" events, but there are some tips you can use for any events:
1. Set a dress code for yourself. Write down what you think should be the rules of casual dressing to help you set a guideline (examples: "No jeans," "Heels must not be above two inches")
2. Makeup shouldn't be a hassle - obviously you want to present yourself in a nice manner, but there's no reason to cake on the same amount you would for a fancy event. BB Cream, concealer, mascara, and a lipstain or gloss should be all you need.
3. At other casual events, take note of what people are wearing. Casual should be a fit between everyday and formal, so see how others play up this style.

Okay, here's the clothes!

1. The Picnic: since you'll probably be outdoors, you want to stay as comfortable as possible. Choose a breezy printed sundress and layer a coordinating cardi over it that you can take off if it gets too warm. Add edge to the feminine pieces by masculine flats and geometric jewelry.

2. The School Visit: if you're visiting or applying for a school, whether it be college or a private school, you want to present yourself in a professional manner. Colored cords are a great alternative to jeans and, with their newfound popularity, now come in skinny fits. Because your pants are simple (albeit bright!) add a statement top. Keep your accessories neutral to balance out the color. A crossbody bag is a simple way to carry all that you should need for the day.

3. The Dinner Party: this should be a lot like the picnic, except that it's indoors, allowing you to wear darker colors and different fabrics. A lace dress is elegant without looking too frumpy, and neutral shoes are perfect to complement the outfit - especially fun, cheeky jewelry! Tone down the formality by wearing a conversation-starting necklace.

4. The Sporting Event: this is one of the harder ones to dress for, but when jeans and a jersey won't suffice, reach for your classics. Polos and pleated skirts are preppy, casual, classic pieces that look perfect at a sporting event (especially if you wear them in team colors!). But since you could be walking around a lot, keep your feet comfy: matching flats such as Keds or Vans add an extra touch of sportiness.

I hope this helps! Have fun looking the best at your next event... and not panicking when you see "dress is casual" on the invitation!
